The Othmane Mosque is one of the main Muslim places of worship in Villeurbanne. Located in the east of the commune, it is an important landmark for the local Muslim community and for many worshippers from neighbouring districts of the Lyon metropolitan area.

A mosque rooted in Villeurbanne

The Othmane Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It plays a particularly important role during the month of Ramadan, when the nightly Tarawih prayers draw large crowds, as well as during major religious holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha). It maintains an official website where prayer times and practical information for worshippers are published.

Villeurbanne, at the heart of the metropolis

Villeurbanne is the second most populous city in the Lyon metropolitan area, with more than 155,000 inhabitants. Bordering Lyon directly, it shares much of its urban fabric and transport network, while retaining a strong identity shaped by its working-class heritage, the Gratte-Ciel district and a vibrant cultural life. The commune is home to a large and well-organised Muslim community, with several mosques and cultural associations. The Othmane Mosque is among the most frequented.

Getting there

The Othmane Mosque is easy to reach by public transport. Villeurbanne is served by the metro (Line A), tram lines T1, T3 and T4, and a dense bus network. Depending on the point of departure, several routes reach the mosque from central Lyon in about twenty minutes. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets but can be limited at peak times.

Advice for visitors

As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday midday prayer and major religious holidays draw large crowds; arriving early is recommended. The mosque's official website remains the best source for up-to-date prayer times and current events.
