The Es-Salem Mosque is one of the leading mosques of Lyon's 8th arrondissement. Its name, which means "peace" in Arabic, captures the spirit it fosters within the Muslim community of south-eastern Lyon.
A mosque of the 8th arrondissement
The Es-Salem Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It takes on particular importance during the month of Ramadan, with the nightly Tarawih prayers and iftar gatherings, as well as during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It can be reached by telephone, and its access has been adapted for people with reduced mobility, including wheelchair users.
Lyon's 8th arrondissement
The 8th arrondissement is one of Lyon's largest and most populous, with more than 85,000 inhabitants. Getting there
The Es-Salem Mosque is well served by Lyon's public transport network. Tram Line T2, which connects Perrache to Saint-Priest, serves the 8th arrondissement, as does tram Line T4 toward Vénissieux and La Doua. Several bus lines complete the coverage. From the Presqu'île or Part-Dieu, the journey by public transport usually takes about twenty minutes. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets but can be saturated during major prayers.
Advice for visitors
As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract large crowds; arriving early is recommended. Wheelchair accessibility is a welcome feature for visitors with reduced mobility.
