The Sociocultural Institute of Muslims sits at 1 Avenue de la Porte des Poissonniers, at the northern edge of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, on the border with Saint-Ouen. The place hosts a prayer hall and community activity aimed at families of the Porte de Clignancourt and La Chapelle neighbourhoods.
Getting there
Porte de Clignancourt métro station (line 4) is under ten minutes away on foot. Tram T3b, which runs along the Maréchaux ring, serves the same station and Porte de la Chapelle further east. Simplon, on line 4, and Marcadet-Poissonniers (lines 4 and 12) provide access from the south. Buses 85 and 137 run up to Porte des Poissonniers, and the N14 night bus covers the area after hours.
The neighbourhood
This fringe of the 18th is working-class and cosmopolitan, marked by the Saint-Ouen flea market a few hundred metres away, the Éole community gardens, and the shopping axis of Rue du Poteau. Maghrebi, sub-Saharan African, Sri Lankan and Eastern European families all live here, and the associative fabric is particularly dense. The proximity of the ring road and Saint-Ouen makes the district a place people pass through as much as a destination, which explains the high number of neighbourhood places of worship.
Practical advice for a visit
The mosque serves its worshippers first. A first visit is easier outside Friday noon and outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before the prayer hall, women cover their hair, and clothes should cover shoulders and legs. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.

Paris has dozens of mosques. In the north of the city, Adda'Wa Mosque in the 19th and Masjid de la Fraternité near Porte d'Aubervilliers serve neighbouring communities. The Grand Mosque of Paris, in the 5th, remains the most institutional.
