The Islamic Association in France runs its prayer room at 35 Cité Industrielle, in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, just off Rue Oberkampf and Boulevard Voltaire. It is a small neighbourhood mosque, discreet and rooted in the local associative fabric, mainly serving worshippers who live or work between République, Parmentier and Ménilmontant.
Getting there
The nearest métro station is Rue Saint-Maur (line 3), around five minutes away on foot. Parmentier, on the same line, also serves the area. To the north, Belleville (lines 2 and 11) opens onto the upper 11th and the neighbouring 20th. Buses 46, 61 and 96, along with the N12 night bus, run nearby. Several Vélib' docking stations sit along Boulevard Voltaire.
The neighbourhood
This part of the 11th mixes Haussmannian buildings, small craft courtyards inherited from the 19th century and more recent cafés. Cité Industrielle itself is a paved cul-de-sac, which keeps access quiet despite the density of the area. The food shops of Boulevard de Belleville and the grocers of Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud are only a few minutes away.
Practical advice for a visit
Like most Paris prayer rooms, the place serves its worshippers first and is not set up as a visitor attraction. A first visit is easier outside Friday noon prayer. Shoes come off before entering, women cover their hair, and clothes should cover shoulders and legs. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
Other mosques in Paris
Paris has dozens of mosques, mostly in its eastern and northern arrondissements. The Grand Mosque of Paris, in the 5th, remains the most institutional. Adda'Wa Mosque on Rue de Tanger in the 19th, and Omar bn El Khattab Mosque in Belleville, are among the busiest in north-eastern Paris.
